In 1967, my father Jack started a specialty cleaning company in Columbus, Ohio, and named it Cameron Service Co. We did commercial window cleaning to support a janitorial company he had started eight years earlier. Two years later, we added carpet cleaning to support the growing janitorial business. My father would take me along on weekends to run buckets for the crews, and eventually taught me to clean carpets myself. It was tough work back then.
In 1978, after graduating high school, I joined the business full-time, and we purchased our first truck-mounted system. Later, after college, I told my dad, “That truck sits around all day – let’s start cleaning people’s homes.” I could see the idea click for him. Within two years, we had a second truck-mounted system, with crews going out during the day and another team working nights.
When my son was born, I named him Cameron. He worked alongside me on weekends and summers throughout his teenage years.
When my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I sold the business and moved to Naples, Florida, to help my mother care for him. After both of my parents passed, Cameron and I decided to honor our family’s legacy and start a new company here.
Cameron’s son, Corbin, joined the USMC Reserves after high school and is eager to work alongside his father and I whenever he’s off duty. That makes four generations, if you’re keeping count.
